HLW Commercial Lawyers was formed in 1992 by a small group of commercial lawyers from a national firm who wanted to provide clients with a genuine alternative to the "big ticket" law firms. That ethos still prevails as the firm continues to attract recruits at all levels from larger competitors, and now has 18 partners and almost 100 staff in Sheffield and Leeds.
The firm's concentration on work for commercial and institutional clients means that it can field an impressive array of talent and experience at highly competitive rates, with a high level of partner involvement. In terms of understanding the needs of FE Colleges, the firm has the advantage of having Barry Warne, a Governor of Sheffield College and member of its Policy and Resources Committee from 1999 to 2003, amongst its partners.
